Why Pet Tags Are a Perfect Laser Product

Pet tags are small, giftable, reorder-prone, and use scraps — the ideal laser item. A coated aluminum or anodized blank takes a permanent mark in seconds and sells for several times the blank cost. Every dog and cat is a repeat customer when the collar updates. This guide covers stock, settings, and the small details that make a tag last outdoors.

Choosing the Blank

Use anodized aluminum (not bare) so a CO2 laser marks it cleanly — black-anodized with a silver mark reads best. Thickness 1–1.5 mm is rigid without weight. Buy pre-punched blanks with the hole already set; cutting the hole yourself risks burrs. Shapes: round, bone, and state-outline all sell; keep a small range so buyers pick. Avoid plastic tabs for outdoor dogs — UV kills them in a season.

Engraving Settings

On 60–80W, 30–45% power at 300–500 mm/s with 300–600 DPI marks anodized tags sharp and fast. Because you only remove dye, speed can be high and heat low, which keeps the mark crisp. Mask the tag if you see surround stain, peel after. Test one blank per batch — anodize thickness varies and a too-hot mark can pit the base.

Layout That Stays Readable

  • Pet name in bold 14 pt+, phone number just below in 10 pt+.
  • Keep text inside the tag, 2 mm from the edge and hole.
  • Add a small icon (paw, heart) only if it does not crowd the text.
  • For two-sided tags, engrave name on front, address/QR on back.

Durability and Finishing

Anodized engraving is already sealed by the oxide, so no coating is needed. Wipe with alcohol. For tags in direct sun, a clear lacquer prolongs the dyed-layer color. Fit a split ring or lobster clasp so the tag stays on the collar; a loose tag is a lost tag. Bag with a card and you have a $6–12 product from a $1 blank.

Scaling the Line

Offer holiday shapes (bone with antlers), breeder tags with a kennel logo, and QR tags linking to a lost-pet page. Once the file is set, reorders are minutes of beam time. Bundle three tags at a discount to lift the average order.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the mark rub off? On anodized layer, no — you removed dye, not scratched the surface.

Can I mark raw aluminum? Not well with CO2; use anodized blanks.

What size sells best? 25–32 mm round — readable but not heavy on a small dog.
