Why Glass Is Tricky for Lasers

Glass partly reflects and partially absorbs the CO2 wavelength, and it hates rapid heating. Uncontrolled energy creates micro-chips, frosty splinters and stress cracks. The fix is not more power - it is less power, applied gently and repeatedly, with a little help from moisture.

The Multiple Light Pass Method

Engrave at 300-600 DPI with low power and moderate speed in two to four light passes instead of one heavy pass. Each pass deepens the frost slightly without thermal shock. Between passes, wipe the surface - residue absorbs unevenly and creates streaks on the next pass.

The Wet Paper Towel Trick

Press a single layer of damp paper towel onto the engraving area, or brush on a thin film of dish soap, before engraving. The moisture conducts heat away smoothly and yields a bright, even frost with dramatically fewer chips. It looks improvised and works brilliantly - glass engravers have relied on it for decades.

Know Which Glass to Use

Never engrave tempered glass - internal stress makes it shatter, sometimes minutes later. Thin drinkware, borosilicate and float glass engrave well. Thick crystal bases with uneven walls focus heat unpredictably; choose consistent, thinner-walled pieces for production work.
