Two Wavelengths, Two Completely Different Jobs
A CO2 laser emits at 10.6 micrometers - a wavelength organic materials absorb beautifully. Wood, acrylic, leather, fabric, rubber, paper and glass all cut or engrave cleanly. A fiber laser emits at 1.06 micrometers, which metals absorb efficiently. Neither machine does the other's job well; the choice flows entirely from your material list.
When CO2 Is the Right Answer
If your products are non-metallic - signage, gifts, packaging prototypes, textiles, personalization - CO2 is the tool. It offers large bed formats at accessible prices, and nothing cuts 10 mm acrylic or engraves wood with the same economy. A CO2 laser can even mark bare metals using marking paste, and marks anodized aluminum directly.
When Fiber Wins
Fiber lasers dominate metal marking and engraving: stainless steel, brass, titanium, tool steel, anodized aluminum, serialized tags and industrial nameplates. They mark fast, need no consumables beyond electricity, and run maintenance-light. If your work is mostly metal branding, fiber is simply the correct tool.
Can You Run Both?
Production shops increasingly do. The CO2 handles the products; the fiber adds serial numbers, barcodes and logos onto metal hardware, tools and finished parts. Because the machines cover disjoint material sets, they complement rather than compete - many workshops report the fiber paying for itself in outsourced-marking savings alone.

Can a CO2 laser engrave metal?
It marks anodized aluminum directly and bare metal with marking compound, but cannot cut or deeply engrave steel. For production metal work you need a fiber laser.
Which machine is cheaper to run?
For non-metal work, CO2. For metal marking, fiber has almost no consumables. Cost follows your material mix, not the machine category.
