Know Your Leather Before the Beam Touches It

Vegetable-tanned and chrome-tanned genuine leathers engrave and cut beautifully. Synthetic leathers are the danger zone: anything containing PVC releases corrosive chlorine when lasered. Buy synthetics only with written confirmation they are PU-based and PVC-free, and keep a dedicated test swatch for every new batch.

Cutting Settings for Clean Edges

Genuine leather 2-4 mm thick cuts cleanly at moderate power with good air assist. Masking tape on the face prevents the brown smoke halo that otherwise needs wiping off. Cut on a raised honeycomb or pin bed so the underside does not scorch. Edge darkening is natural and often desirable - it reads as handcrafted.

Engraving and Marking

Logos, monograms and patterns engrave at low-to-medium power. For a darker mark, dampen the leather slightly before engraving; for a subtle tone-on-tone look, keep power low and speed high. Always run settings on a corner swatch - leather varies between hides more than any other material we cut.

Ventilation Is Not Optional

Leather produces a strong organic smell and particulate load. Run full exhaust during every job and clean the bed afterward. A workshop that smells like a tannery loses customers; a clean-smelling one can work in shared spaces.

Can I laser cut faux or vegan leather?

Only if the supplier confirms in writing it is PU without PVC. When burned, PVC releases chlorine gas that endangers you and corrodes the machine.

Why do my cut edges turn yellow-brown?

That is heat tinting. Reduce power or increase speed for a lighter edge, or embrace it as a decorative burnish - both are valid styles.
