Know Your Woods
Hardwood, softwood, MDF and plywood each engrave differently. Hardwoods like maple and walnut give rich, warm contrast thanks to resin density. Softwoods burn faster but with wider variation between boards. MDF engraves a uniform dark brown and is the most predictable, at the cost of heavy dust extraction needs. Plywood engraves cleanly on the face but glue lines can show in deep engraving.
Getting Dark, Crisp Contrast
The recipe for contrast is moderate power, slower speed, good air assist and a clean surface. Sand to 220 grit or finer before engraving - surface finish differences show up directly in the mark. For extra pop on light woods, seal with a sanding sealer before engraving and finish with varnish after; the sealed surface darkens more evenly.
Photo Engraving on Wood
Convert photos with a dither pattern (Jarvis or Bayer), engrave at 300-500 DPI, and keep power low with a light first pass. Wood photographs best on tight-grain species - Baltic birch and maple are the studio favorites. Always run a small test swatch before committing an hour-long job.
Deep Engraving vs Surface Marking
Surface marking keeps detail and speed; deep engraving builds dimension but needs multiple passes at moderate power. Going too deep in one pass carbonizes the grain and buries your detail. If you need depth, mask between passes and clean the debris.
A Word on Safe Material
Only engrave wood that is untreated or clearly documented. Wood containing PVC or certain laminates releases corrosive or toxic fumes. When in doubt, ask the supplier for a safety data sheet before the beam touches it.

Why does my engraving look uneven across one board?
Grain and resin density vary naturally. Sand uniformly and consider a pre-coat of sealer; even then, some variation is part of wood's character.
Can I engrave painted or lacquered wood?
Yes - the laser removes the coating and marks beneath. Test first: some lacquers melt instead of ablate.
